Complete Maryland Reconstruction Survey - before August 31st

Saint Paul is soliciting public feedback about two street layout alternatives for Maryland Avenue from East Como Boulevard to Rice Street. This corridor will be reconstructed in 2028 and 2029 and will include some sort of bikeway, pedestrian safety improvements, and transit improvements for the H Line. 

The Sustain Saint Paul Transportation Committee supports the inclusion of a two-way bikeway as depicted in Alternative 1 rather than a multi-use path depicted in Alternative 2. This is a busy pedestrian corridor that connects multiple popular destinations including Conny’s Creamy Cone, Como Lake, and Como Park Senior High. A design that minimizes bicycle and pedestrian conflicts is critical. Alternative 1’s proposed two-way bikeway will work well while retaining boulevard space for trees. Similar designs can be found on Hennepin Avenue and Bryant Avenue in Minneapolis.

Travel lane widths in both street layout alternatives were 12.5 ft, well above the 11 ft maximum recommended by the NACTO Urban Street Design Guide. Our urban corridors have space constraints and these extra feet could widen sidewalks or boulevard spaces, while maintaining safe lane widths for future H Line buses.
